Dressing your choir, band, or orchestra in formal wear does not have to be an expensive option.  With a bit of research and smart choices, you too can have a polished and professional look for your group!

5 Tuxedo Buying Tips

  1. Look for the lowest prices first, then compare quality – price will filter your options so you can take a close look at two or three.
  2. When looking at quality, consider when, where, and how long you plan to wear your tuxes.
  3. Decide which style options will look best on your group and provide the right level of "formal" .
  4. Simplify the process by ordering a complete package instead of building your tuxedo piece by piece.
  5. Consider ease of sizing, exchange and return policies, delivery time, and shipping costs.

1. Tuxedo Coat

Peak vs. Notch The Peak Lapel Tuxedo Coat is the more formal option, and looks best with a Wing Collar Tuxedo Shirt and Bow Tie/Cummerbund. You may not want to pair a regular collar and long tie with the Peak Lapel, allowing you to maintain the more formal look. The Peak Lapel Tuxedo Coat is available in adult sizes only. The Notch Lapel Tuxedo Coat pairs well with any combination of tuxedo shirt collar and tie. It tends to be the more popular option, and is available in both adult and youth sizes. Other features of the Tuxedo Coat include:
  • One-button style coat
  • Three-button sleeve
  • Breast pocket and inside pockets
  • Two side pockets*
  • Satin lapel
*Side pockets have satin trim and are a convertible style, able to be worn with a flap on the outside or with the flap tucked in for a slit style pocket. The inside pockets are useful for storing items like your phone and wallet.

2. Tuxedo Pants

Pleated vs flat front With the Tuxedo Pants, you can choose from Pleated or Flat Front. Each option goes well with a cummerbund or without, so the style you choose is really a matter of preference. Other features of the Tuxedo Pants are:
  • Matte satin stripe on outside of pant legs
  • Functional front and back pockets
  • Right pocket can be buttoned to contain personal items

3. Tuxedo Shirt

wing vs regular graphic Choose from a Regular Collar, a traditional dress shirt collar, or a  Wing Collar, a banded collar with the front corners folded down. Wing Collars are typically worn with a Bow Tie, and tend to be a bit more popular with the tuxedo look. Regular Collars look great with both the Bow Tie and the Long Tie option. Other features of the Tuxedo Shirt are:
  •  ¼ inch width pin tuck pleats
  • Standard button on sleeve with slits to accommodate cufflinks
  • Standard buttons down the shirt front with slits for button studs if desired
  • Includes  four black plastic studs for the shirt front (replacement studs are available)

4. Tuxedo Satin Accessories

Long tie vs. bowtie The Long Tie (or Cinch Tie) comes in either skinny width (2 inches) or regular width (3 inches). This tie goes well with a Regular Collar tuxedo shirt. The tie is pre-knotted and allows for easy adjustment, slipping over the head and sliding for neck adjustments. A Bowtie & Cummerbund is classic with a Wing Collar shirt. Since the shirt front is visible, using studs in place of the standard button is a great option. Both Long Ties and Bow Ties/Cummerbunds are:
  • Satin fabric (with a bit more sheen than the satin coat details)
  • Easy to adjust for fit
  • Available in 16 colors (Quick Ship colors include Black, Royal, Red, Claret, & Blue)
cummerbunds

How's the Fit of the Tuxedo Ensemble?

The Tuxedo Coat and Pants are a classic fit, without the slimming cut of a modern fit tuxedo in the waist or the pant. The coat sleeves have about a half of an inch of excess fabric stitched in. If you need that little extra bit of length, it is a good idea to take it to a tailor who can let the extra ½ inch out and re-stitch it. The sleeves have three buttons, which looks more polished than just one, but will mean the tailor needs to remove all three when adjusting the sleeve length. The Tuxedo Pants have an adjustable waist and 34 inch inseam. The silver clasps on either side flip up and slides to adjust an extra total inch in or out. The pants arrive unhemmed allowing you to adjust for your performers’ individual pant lengths. If the pants will be used season after season with different performers, a tailor could do a blind stitch, which will not cut off any length and allow the pants to be re-hemmed over and over again. The Tuxedo Shirts are made of washable and comfortable poly/cotton fabric. The collar of the shirt has an elastic band on the button to give more ease around the neck if needed. The Long Cinch Tie is already tied; all you do is slip it on over your head and adjust the knot up. The Bowtie is already tied as well, and has an adjustable closure. The Cummerbund has elastic around the adjustable closure in the back for a little extra stretch.
